  • The Human Side of Protection: Reflections from National Grief Awareness Week

As a Protection & Mortgage Adviser, I spend a lot of time talking about policies and claims. But behind every policy is a family, and behind every claim is a story—often a very difficult one.

From 2–8 December, National Grief Awareness Week reminds us what bereavement really feels like. Led by The Good Grief Trust, it brings together charities and NHS partners to ensure no one grieves alone.

For me, it’s a time to reflect: When a client dies, what does the family go through? And do the solutions we recommend truly support them—not just financially, but emotionally and practically?

What Grief Really Looks Like

Grief isn’t neat or predictable. Families often face:

  • Emotional strain: Shock, sadness and anxiety.
  • Cognitive impact: Poor concentration and decision fatigue.
  • Physical symptoms: Exhaustion, headaches, chest tightness.
  • Financial worry: Concerns about bills and the future.

Now imagine asking someone in this state to find policy documents and complete forms. It’s a huge ask.

Do Protection Products Truly Help?

On paper, policies pay out. According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and Group Risk Development (GRiD), UK insurers paid £7.34 billion in protection claims in 2023, with 97–98% approved. But support is more than money—it’s about speed, simplicity, and compassion.

The FCA recently highlighted delays of up to four months for some bereavement claims. That’s unacceptable when families are most vulnerable. The best providers go further, offering:

  • Grief counselling
  • Probate and legal guidance
  • Helplines and wellbeing support

These aren’t extras—they make a real difference.

Why Trusts Matter

Placing life policies in trust avoids probate delays, ensures payouts go directly to beneficiaries, and reduces stress at a critical time.

My Role Under FCA Guidance

Bereavement is a clear vulnerability trigger. Under Consumer Duty, I aim to:

  • Identify vulnerability early
  • Communicate clearly and simply
  • Make reasonable adjustments
  • Signpost trusted support
  • Advocate for clients if delays occur

Where I Signpost Clients

  • The Good Grief Trust – National hub of bereavement services
  • Cruse Bereavement Support – Helpline and local groups
  • Winston’s Wish / Child Bereavement UK – Support for children
  • Grief Encounter – Help for bereaved families
  • Sue Ryder – Online community and counselling

Why This Matters

Grief Awareness Week reminds us that fast claims and clear products matter—but emotional and practical support often matters most.
